33 Life is Strange: Before The Storm Becoming Chloe • PLATFORM PS4, XBOX ONE, PC • STYLE 1-PLAYER ADVENTURE • PUBLISHER SQUARE ENIX • DEVELOPER DECK NINE • RELEASE AUGUST 31 L ife is Strange told a heartfelt coming-of-age story about the friendship between two young women, Max and Chloe. It showed the ups and downs of young adulthood, tackling serious themes like suicidal thoughts and grief alongside the day-to-day difficulties of adolescence. The narrative also delved into the mystery surrounding the disap-pearance of high school student Rachel Amber. At this E3, Square Enix announced Before the Storm, a three-episode prequel that focuses on friendship once again. This time it’s Chloe and Rachel’s bond, which was never fully explored in the original. Before the Storm takes place three years before the events of the first game. You play as Chloe, who is dealing with the aftermath of her father’s death. She's still figuring out who she is, and believes the whole world is against her. This causes conflict at home and school. In many ways, Rachel Amber is the opposite of Chloe. She's confident, popular, and at the top of her class. The pair form an unlikely friendship, changing each other's lives, especially when a family secret turns Rachel’s world upside down. Since Before the Storm takes place before all the hot 50 chaos with Max’s power, you won't be rewinding time. "For us, the power ended up just not fitting," says lead writer Zak Garriss. "For me, and for other people, the strongest element of the first game was how relatable the characters were and how relat-able the world was.” Although you can’t rewind time, you still have choices and dialogue options to shape the nar-rative. For instance, in our E3 presentation, there were plenty of options for how far you wanted to take Chloe’s rebellious side, whether it was choos-ing to steal money, take drugs, or tell people off.
