40 Yakuza 6: The song of life Wrapping up Kiryu’s saga with style • PLATFORM PS4 • STYLE 1-PLAYER ACTION/ROLE-PLAYING • PUBLISHER SEGA • DEVELOPER SEGA • RELEASE 2018 W estern fans of the Yakuza series are hav-ing quite a run lately. After this year’s release of Yakuza 0, this August fans will be treated to Yakuza Kiwami, a remake of the original Yakuza game in the Yakuza 0 engine. Following that we finally get to see how Kazuma Kiryu’s story ends in Yakuza 6. Yakuza 6 brings the series to a modern setting, complete with cell phones, selfies, and social influ-encers. These new elements play a role in the story, with selfies capturing ghosts from past Yakuza members, and social influencers handing out side-missions. The 2015 setting also means Kiryu is no longer the youngster he was early in the series. In this, his final chapter, Kiryu is in his 40s. Rather than switching between fighting styles as with previous entries, Yakuza 6 sees Kiryu sticking with one style and mastering it. This means a more streamlined approach to combat and upgrades. In addition, Sega has listened to several fan requests hot 50 to include various quality-of-life improvements, such as improved navigation. As with previous entries, Kiryu has many activi-ties he can take part in outside of the main story. During my time, I get into some street brawls and go to the gym to keep the aging Kiryu in tip-top shape. Working with a personal trainer, I guide Kiryu through short minigames to complete weightlifting and cross-training activities to earn points that can be funneled into his abilities.
